Vailsburg Day is the one time of year hundreds of Vailsburg residents dine together to celebrate the accomplishments of our children and community leaders. It's the one event where teachers and teens, preachers and organizers, parents and neighbors honor one another, by nominating a peer, mentor, or mentee for a Community Service or Youth Achievement award.

Memorial Awards are named in honor of neighborhood pioneers who worked to stabilize Vailsburg and have passed on. They are:

• The Rabbi Julius Eidenbaum Award for Corporate Community Service 
• The Justice William j. Brennan Award for Public Service
• The Reverend Sean Booker Award for Faith Based Service
• The Dr. Jesse Turk Award for Community Service
• The Dorothy Williams Employee of the Year Award
• The Terrence Aeriel Scholarship

Nominations for the Community Service Award & Youth Achievement Award are cast by stakeholders from all over the community including Block Association Leaders, Ministers, Business Owners, Coaches, Educators, and other community authorities.

The Vailsburg Day Committee reviews all submissions, and awardees are chosen by a consensus process. Fifteen (15) Community Service Awards and one-hundred (100) Youth Achievement Awards are bestowed to honorees who have demonstrated actions of civic responsibility and neighborhood vitality.

Nine (9) Vailsburg Neighborhood Schools participate in Vailsburg Day by nominating ten students for Youth Achievement Awards. They are:

• Mt. Vernon Elementary School
• Ivy Hill Elementary School
• Lincoln Elementary School
• Al-Hidaayah Academy
• Vailsburg Elementary School-North Star Academy
• Alexander Street School
• St. Joseph's School
• Speedway Avenue School
• West Side High School 

Vailsburg Day concludes with a buffet style dinner. Raffle and door prizes are auctioned off and music, dance, and laughter round off an evening of community fun and celebration.
